Why does kidney disease cause severe itching, sometimes even when there is no rash? This condition is called CKD-associated pruritus, also known as uremic pruritus. It is common in people with advanced chronic kidney disease and those receiving dialysis, but the exact cause is more complicated than simply having “too many toxins” in the blood. In this video, we explore the itch mystery and explain what may be happening inside the body. Persistent itching can significantly affect quality of life, sleep, mood, and daily activities. If you have severe or persistent itching, talk with your healthcare team because other causes—including medications, liver disease, thyroid disease, dermatologic conditions, and allergic or systemic disorders—may also need to be considered. Treatment focuses on identifying contributing factors, protecting the skin, and using medications when appropriate. This video is for educational purposes only and does not replace individualized medical advice. Do not start or stop medication for itching without discussing it with your healthcare professional. #CKD #CKDAssociatedPruritus #UremicPruritus #KidneyItching #ChronicKidneyDisease #Dialysis #Difelikefalin #Gabapentin #KidneyHealth #Nephrology #KidneyClarity
