An original fictional story. People, creatures and places are invented; visuals and voices are AI-generated.
The dry south of Madagascar, 1851. In a riverbed that has been dry since March, a round hole of clear water appears in the white sand every dawn, ringed by three-toed footprints longer than a woman's forearm. Ravo, a honey gatherer, follows the tracks through the spiny forest to a hidden hollow of seven old fig trees, and finds who has been digging the water: the vorombe, a gentle giant bird three metres tall, the last of her kind, quietly keeping watch over a single egg.
At the trading post on the river mouth, the trader Silas Thorne sells water by the cup and has promised Paris a whole egg. When his silver turns the thirsty village against her, Ravo agrees to guide him, and leads him two days the wrong way: to an old hill of ancient shells, and a shining salt flat where the sea comes back at noon. But the bird has followed her all the way.
A story about water, kindness, and an old friendship between a family and a bird that never forgot them.
Inspired by the vorombe, the elephant bird (Aepyornis) of Madagascar: a real giant flightless bird that is now extinct. A vorombe still living in 1851 is fantasy; the story, the places and all of its people are fiction. The end card draws on Étienne de Flacourt, «Histoire de la Grande Isle Madagascar» (1658), which describes a great bird of the south that kept to the loneliest places.
Director's note: Almost nothing is left of the elephant bird but broken shell and a few old lines about a great bird that hid from people, and I wanted to imagine who such a bird might still trust. So here it digs water for a family whose grandmother planted fig trees for it when it was a lost chick, and the woman who guards it wins without a fight, simply by walking greed two days the wrong way. What stayed with me, and what I hope stays with you, is how long one small kindness can be remembered.
