It was quarried at Balmoral, in the Scottish Highlands, and carried across the sea to mark the exact spot where, in June 1940, an entire British division was left behind. While 338,000 men were lifted off the beaches at Dunkirk and carried home as a miracle, the soldiers of the 51st Highland Division were still fighting, 200 miles south, under orders that would cost almost every one of them their freedom.
