I checked the hull against the pier post again. The tide dropped. The hull dropped with it. ________________________________ The hull lies over the water, a kilometre of dark plate with its underside lost in mist. Nothing holds it. There is no mast, no cable, no pylon, no cradle, and the sea beneath is the same grey as the sky above, with no shadow on it. A pier stump stands on the shore, and its top has been the datum for the hull's height since the first entry in the book. The tide goes out twice a day, as tides do.
