I had the chance to walk the famous Philosopher’s Path (Tetsugaku no Michi) in Kyoto — and yes, it was raining. But honestly? It didn’t matter one bit. The path was every bit as beautiful and peaceful as I’d hoped. This roughly 2-kilometer stone path follows a quiet canal through the Higashiyama district, connecting Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion) in the north to the grand Nanzen-ji temple complex in the south. It gets its name from Nishida Kitarō, a renowned Japanese philosopher and founder of the Kyoto School of Philosophy, who reportedly walked this exact route every day on his way to teach at Kyoto University, using the stroll as a form of daily meditation. There’s even a small memorial stone along the path with one of his reflections engraved on it. Because of the weather, we unfortunately couldn’t spend a full day exploring. I really wish we had, because there’s so much more to see here. If you’re planning your own visit, here are a few spots along the way that are worth building extra time for: Honen-in Temple – a quiet, moss-covered retreat just off the main path, with a striking thatched-roof entrance gate. Otoyo Shrine – a small, whimsical shrine known for its unusual mouse guardian statues instead of the typical fox or lion-dogs. Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji – famous for its stunning autumn colors and home to the unique “Looking Back Amida” Buddha statue, plus a striking hillside pagoda with panoramic views. Nanzen-ji Temple – the path’s grand finale, with a massive 22-meter wooden gate you can actually climb, and a surprising Meiji-era brick aqueduct running right through the temple grounds. Along the way you’ll also pass cozy cafés, small artisan shops, and (if you’re lucky) the occasional cat wandering the canal path. The route is flat, paved, and easy to walk, and it’s open 24/7, so it’s just as magical for an early morning stroll or a quiet evening walk as it is during the day. Even soaked from the rain, this was one of the most peaceful experiences of the trip. Next time, I’m giving it a full day. 🌧️🍵 Explore for More videos Japan:    • Japan   Tokyo Disney Resort:    • Tokyo Disney Resort by Disneyllusion   All playlists:    / @thetravelambience   Airlines:    • Airlines   Amsterdam:    • Amsterdam   Background Ambience:    • Background Ambience (Please see description)   Cruise Lines:    • Cruise lines   Hotels & Resorts:    • Hotels & Resorts   Nederland van toen (Dutch/English):    • Nederland van toen   Rail Away:    • Rail Away   The continent of Asia:    • Asia   The Netherlands:    • The Netherlands - Nederland   Gardens:    • Gardens   ————————— Instagram: Travel: https://www.instagram.com/thetravelam...
