Are you curious about this French Toast from 1749? Both the bread & this recipe are from that date. So, join me in my kitchen as I recreate this vintage classic! French Toast Recipe- 1749- From Martha Washington’s Booke of Cookery 4 thick slices of homemade or French style bread 1/2-1 cup white wine 1/2 cup heavy cream 2 egg yolks 1/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons butter for frying For decorating: sugar and freshly ground nutmeg 1. Soak the bread slices in the wine for 6-8 hours or overnight. 2. Whisk together the cream, sugar and egg yolks. Soak the bread slices in this mixture for 15 minutes. 3. Melt butter in an electric skillet and fry the bread slices on both sides. 4. Top each slice with granulated sugar and freshly ground nutmeg. Enjoy! 😊 #vintagecooking #food #vintage #classicrecipes #cooking #delicious #foodie #oldrecipes #recipe #retrorecipes #1700s #frenchtoast #breakfastrecipe
