Why are you not getting faster with Zone 2 training? If you've been running in Zone 2 for months but your pace isn't improving, your heart rate is still high, or you're struggling to run faster at a low heart rate, this conversation with exercise physiologist Dr. Juan Murias could change how you train. Zone 2 training is often promoted as the foundation of aerobic endurance. But is running easy really enough to improve your VO₂ max, lactate threshold, and running performance—especially if you're a recreational runner training just 3–4 times per week? In this episode of The Endurance Lab, Dr. Murias breaks down research comparing five different training intensities, from moderate-intensity Zone 2 exercise to Zone 3, threshold training, VO₂ max intervals, and sprint interval training. One surprising finding: after approximately 6–7 weeks of training, the moderate-intensity group showed no statistically significant average improvement in VO₂ max or lactate thresholds compared with a group that did no training. Some individuals still improved, but higher-intensity training produced more consistent responses. So does Zone 2 training actually work? Should you spend less time running easy and more time training at higher intensities? And what is the best way to improve your Zone 2 running pace without constantly pushing your heart rate higher? We discuss: Why your Zone 2 pace may not be improving despite consistent training How to run faster at a lower heart rate by improving aerobic fitness Why Zone 2 training alone may not provide enough stimulus for some runners Zone 2 vs Zone 3 vs Zone 4 vs Zone 5 training How VO₂ max and lactate thresholds affect running speed Whether the 80/20 running method works for low-volume recreational runners The role of tempo runs, threshold training, and high-intensity intervals Why generic heart rate training zones can be misleading How to adjust your training when you've hit a plateau Why easy running still matters for marathon training and injury management 💊 SUPPORT YOUR HEALTH WITH MICROVITAMIN MicroVitamin is designed to help fill nutritional gaps without unnecessary megadosing, with independently tested ingredients and a transparent formula. ➡️ SAVE 10% OFF with CODE: JUSMAN 👉 https://microvitamin.com/jusman 🔥 FIND YOUR TRUE ZONE 2 WITH TYMEWEAR Tymewear Vita Pro measures your breathing in real time to identify your individual physiological thresholds and help you train at the intensity you actually intend to train at. ➡️ Endurance Lab listeners SAVE $100 OFF the Tymewear Pro Training membership 👉 https://www.tymewear.com/E-LABTW26 Code: E-LABTW26 ➡️ Listen to my conversation with TimeWear founder Anar Larson: 👉    • Exercise Physiologist: The Most Accurate W...   ➡️ Join The Endurance Lab Inner Circle on Telegram 👉 https://t.me/TheEnduranceLabInnerCircle CHAPTERS 00:00 Why Zone 2 Isn't Working 01:48 Understanding Training Zones 08:26 Is Zone 2 Too Easy? 11:29 Zone 2 vs HIIT 21:26 The Zone 2 Study Results 23:22 Why Some Runners Don't Improve 28:49 VO₂ Max: Which Zone Wins? 31:42 How to Improve Lactate Threshold 37:48 Does 80/20 Work for Recreational Runners? 40:17 Zone 2 and Mitochondria 47:04 Why Easy Running Still Matters 49:20 Low Zone 2 vs High Zone 2 52:03 Training Only 3 Hours a Week 1:00:07 What to Do When Zone 2 Stops Working 1:07:41 Are Your Heart Rate Zones Wrong? #Zone2Training #RunningTraining #VO2Max
