If you grew up in America in the 1960s, some dinners never really left you.
Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Meatloaf. Chicken pot pie. Beef stew. Sunday roast. Pot roast slowly cooking for hours while the smell filled the house.
In this video, we’re going back to 25 classic American dinners that many families remember from the 1960s — the meals Mom made, the dishes that appeared on Sunday tables, and the simple foods that can still bring an entire kitchen back with one smell.
Some were quick weekday dinners.
Some were saved for Sunday or company.
And some became family recipes that were never quite the same when anyone else made them.
From Salisbury steak and tuna noodle casserole to spaghetti and meatballs, fried chicken, roast beef and pot roast, these were the kinds of meals that helped define everyday family life for a generation.
Which one was your mom’s specialty?
And what dinner did your family make that should have been on this list?
Tell us in the comments — and include the state where you grew up. It will be interesting to see how different these memories are across America.
