You love your aging parent more than almost anyone alive, and some days you're already tired before it's light out.
This prayer meets you there — however far away, however worn out, however long it's been — and reminds you that you were never asked to carry them alone.
This morning prayer is for anyone holding an aging parent's care — the son or daughter driving over after work, the family member on the phone from another state, the one sitting in a hallway that smells like a hospital, and the one whose parent has already passed. It walks through Isaiah 46, Exodus 20, the story of Ruth and Naomi, and the moment Jesus hands his own mother into someone else's care, to show that honoring your parent was never meant to mean carrying them by yourself. If your patience ran out last night, this prayer is for the morning after.
