Does a Knee Cap Really Help Reduce Knee Pain? | Which Knee Brace Should You Use? A knee cap or knee brace can provide support, warmth, comfort and stability but there is no single knee cap that is right for every type of knee pain. The correct brace depends on why your knee hurts. In this video, Dr. Vrajesh Shah explains the different types of knee supports and when they may be useful: Tubular/Compression Knee Support: May provide warmth, compression and a feeling of support during walking or prolonged standing, particularly in early knee osteoarthritis. It does not need to be worn continuously while sitting or resting. Open-Patella Knee Cap: Designed to provide support around the kneecap and may be recommended for selected patients with patellar maltracking problems. Unloader/deloader Knee Brace: Used in selected patients where osteoarthritis predominantly affects one compartment of the knee. It is designed to shift some load away from the affected side. Hinged Knee Brace: Provides additional side-to-side stability and may be recommended following certain injuries or in patients with knee or ligament instability. ACL/PCL Braces: Specialized braces may be prescribed for certain ligament injuries, rehabilitation or return to activity. Most importantly, a knee cap does not repair worn cartilage or cure the underlying cause of knee pain. Think of it as a support not the complete treatment. If your brace causes increased pain, skin irritation, numbness, excessive tightness or worsening swelling, stop using it and seek professional advice.
