Sarah Winnemucca’s 1883 book really does describe a hostile group associated with reddish hair, cannibalism and a deadly cave siege.
But she never calls them giants.
Lovelock Cave is a real archaeological site with thousands of artifacts, human remains and an extraordinary record of Great Basin life. The modern story of seven- to nine-foot red-haired giants grew later, when collectors, promoters and sensational retellings fused separate claims together.
This episode follows the original source, the archaeology and the mutation that turned a difficult Northern Paiute historical tradition into monster lore.
