Endgame Beat Avatar Again. Here's the Real Champion

In October 2026, Avengers: Endgame went back into theaters and took the title of highest-grossing film of all time from Avatar, at first by less than two million dollars. It was the third time since 2019 that the two films had traded the record. But this fight is 111 years old. Since 1915, only eleven films are generally listed as holding the crown: The Birth of a Nation, Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Jurassic Park, Titanic, Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. This is the story of how each one took it, what it changed about the movie business, and why, once you adjust for inflation, the real champion is still a film from 1939. This video is commentary and education. It uses no film footage: the images are public-domain posters, publicity photos and newspaper advertisements, plus photographs shared under Creative Commons licenses. Box-office figures are worldwide grosses as reported by Box Office Mojo and The Numbers; early records are distributor rentals.
