An off-duty Oakland Police officer walked into a trauma ER with a knife wound on his neck and reported that an armed robber had ambushed and slashed him on the Iron Horse Trail. Thirteen police officers conducted a shoulder-to-shoulder grid search of the trail. A police K9 unit tracked the path. Firefighters waded through the Contra Costa Canal, and maintenance crews swept the brush with metal detectors. They found zero blood drops and zero weapons—until a knife with his own DNA mysteriously turned up in the exact canal spot searchers had already cleared.
Then detectives pulled the residential security cameras on his own street.
In Episode 2 of Case File Cam, we reconstruct Oakland Police Department Internal Affairs Case #18-0588 (and East Bay Regional Park Police Case #18-005121) using the official public records released under California SB 1421: Officer Spencer’s uncut body-worn camera (BWC) interview, the recorded Iron Horse Trail walk-through, the public works employee’s statement after finding the knife, the neighborhood CCTV timeline showing a 9-minute 46-second subdivision loop, the cognitive interview Freudian slip ("and I cut my neck"), the Internal Affairs interrogation, and the Hearing Officer’s 24-page termination decision.
