June 1, 1940. You're a 20-year-old British private standing up to your chest in the English Channel, rifle over your head, in a line of men that runs back up the beach into the dunes. You've been on this beach for four days. The little boat at the head of the line is full and turning away. And a Stuka is screaming down out of the sky.
Hundreds of thousands of men are trapped on the sand at Dunkirk with the German army closing in, and England has sent boats for maybe a tenth of them. Then Hitler stops his tanks for three days, and an armada of fishing boats, ferries and pleasure yachts sets out across the Channel.
This is the story of the waiting, the queues in the sea, the bombing, the Mole, the little ships, and the boat that might not come. Would you have waited your turn?
Tell me in the comments what you would have done.
This is a dramatisation based on the historical record. "You", Alfie and the families are imagined, standing in for the ordinary soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force; the dates, places, ships and numbers of Operation Dynamo follow the record (sources: Imperial War Museums, BBC WW2 People's War memoirs).
