On the night of September 9th, 1943, a Halifax bomber took off from England and turned east toward occupied Poland. Three Polish paratroopers sat in the dark fuselage. Two were army officers. The third was a 34-year-old mathematics teacher, and under her jump suit, beneath a heavy coat and a wool jumper, she was wearing a navy-blue silk dress. She was also afraid of heights. Her name was Elżbieta Zawacka. Of the 316 Silent Unseen paratroopers dropped into occupied Poland during the war, she was the only woman — and the jump was the easy part of her year.
